In Exodus 20, we find the decalogue or 10 commandments, which is an overview of the Law of Moses. The 10 commandments are divided into two major categories: 4 instructions on how to relate to God in righteousness, and 6 instructions on how to relate to others in righteousness. Jesus sums up these laws by saying we are to love God in righteousness and to love others in righteousness (Matthew 22:36-40). The law reveals to us the holiness of God, the demands of the law, and our inability to keep the law in righteousness. The first commandment speaks to God’s holiness and how Israel was to worship him in righteousness.
